01:16 pm - Question on the university system in the UK
A job description I discovered yesterday requires applicants to have an Upper 2nd or 1st class Honours Degree in Chemistry. What does that mean? Should I be glad that the company also offers BUPA Health Insurance? Is it nice in Sudbury (Sussex)? Thank you for your input.

The Harry Potter Test )

I still realised that I need to reread the books. Amongst other things, I can't remember how many quidditch matches Harry won in book 4.

04:58 pm - Harriet Potter
There's a hilarious comment on what would happen if everyone's sex in the Harry Potter series was switched, written by [info]fernwithy. Her post can be found here. I especially liked the following line.

Severa Snape, on the other hand, is perpetually described like she has permanent PMS--that focus on schoolgirl bullying, and inability to be objective about it!

11:54 am - Lifejournal haiku
I haven't done many memes recently, but that's one of the few whose results are worth saving. The haiku is created by randomly using words posted on your own lj. I sort of like its message.

Since I've finally managed to get my very own photobucket account, I'm now able to also take part in this desktop meme that has been floating around lj-land for the last couple of days. I think the first desktop picture I saw was posted by [info]pandora_nervosa.

01:46 pm - The "Darsina meets HP" meme
An OC meme, taken from [info]author_by_night:

If I were a character in HP fandom...

a. Who would the shippers pair me with?
b. Who would the slashers pair me with?
c. What kind of Mary Sue or which Canon Sue would I be?
d. Write a summary of the story with me as a character that would win the Best Fanfic Award.

04:19 pm - The Secret Language of Birthdays
A great thanks to [info]wandlimb for scanning and emailing me two pages of The Secret Language of Birthdays by Gary Goldschneider and Joost Elffers that gives personology profiles for each day of the year, as it is stated in the book's title.

Now I know that people born on November 1st are individual (I'd hope so.), highly opinionated (erm, yes, true), eager to rise to the top (well, that's a nice Slytherin trait, isn't it?), but they may be rash and highly destructive to themselves and to others (only to myself, but that with a fervor). My tarot card is the "The Magician". I don't really know anything about tarot, but IMO that's a nice coincidence, in particular since this card also features one of my favourite symbols, namely the horizontal 8 that stands for eternity.). We are accident-prone (duh, if you're sort of clumsy) and should exercise daily and watch our eating habits ( I know, I know... *sighs*). I'm attracted by dangerous work (Does being a chemist count?), will only be satisfied if my work is stimulating (IMO there should be a balance between stimulation and routine.), and I'm honest and straightforward. Both is certainly true. I can't stand being accused of lying - never could, even when I was still a child. Moreover people (not speaking about my flist here) usually notice if I don't agree with them or don't like them, because I either let them know (politely, of course) or simply withdraw myself. I'm most happy in attack mode (doesn't mean that I wouldn't appreciate a little rest, though), but need to develop sound common sense (It definitely lacks on occasion, but at least I never make the same mistake twice.). It also says that I have excellent insights into technical matters and people except for myself. I don't agree with the latter. It's not that I wouldn't know what I needed to change, but I don't seem to be able to find the strenght and energy to get things actually accomplished.

And finally something that's meant for meditation: "The stillest part of the hurrican is its centre." Stay calm even if the world around is running amok, or what? I'm not entirely sure how that is supposed to help, but it sounds nice.

The following which I got by email today gave me a good laugh. John Cleese's #1, however, should be made known to everybody writing HP fanfic. IMO it's somewhat irritating to read a story that is supposed to happen in an all British setting, yet it's interspersed with US American vocabulary and spelling. Probably a little pet peeve of mine.

I just had to do [info]laurelwood's Build-a-Snape. So much fun, give it a try yourself, if you haven't already done so. Now it's only left to find out where to get the parts for this kit from to start assembling. ;)

01:05 pm - As green as yew
Taken from [info]jessblack.

yew and phoenix feather wand )

I like yew, always did since I was a little child. One side of my parent's backyard is fenced by a dense dark green yew hedge. It looks so noble and elegant, a lot classier than the arborvitae hedges on the other two sides. It stays flexible even when it ages, making its wood a perfect choice for bows, and it carries the threat of being entirely poisonous but for the red fleshy fruit that have a dark brown core that's also deadly. I suppose I was already weird when I was still a child, because that threat being present in such a beautiful plant fascinated me, as I adored my parents' daturas, oleandri and laburnum. To calm you down, I also had fun with my berry plants (strawberry, raspberry and blackberry) and my pumpkin breeding experiments. I went for big fruit and unusal shapes and coloures.

As for the wand, IMO that's a perfect choice for a devoted Slytherin. After all it's neither the wand's nor the House's fault that one of its owners respectively members took the wrong choices and tried to assume power. Classy, subtle and potent, that's what I'd ask for. Who cares about Care of Magical Creatures anyway? *smirks*

another sorting hat meme )

There are plenty of Slytherins who are not 'evil', and it has been known that friendships with Slytherins are nearly always the most intense and psychologically fulfilling, and friendships are more likely to turn into something more if a Slytherin-like persona is involved.

Hear hear, so true! Same goes for Scorpios, if I dare say.

in other cases they are the students who discover astonishing work all alone in a lab somewhere

That sounds just like me, at least the part about working all alone in a lab. Did that for more than three years.

12:24 pm - Women 2005
In the course of women's day the city next to the one I live in organised a fair called Women 2005 in their stylish conference, exhibition and fair centre that took place yesterday. Its architecture is very modern, only steel and glass, which may look a bit cold, but from the inside it's quite amazing. One big room that can be divided into sections by inserting relocatable walls, everything in full daylight due to the glass construction. All in all, it looks really airy. Here's a view from inside.

The fair covered many aspects of life that could be of importance to women. I visited stalls on education and training, style counselling, health (e.g. fitness, contraception), daycare organisations, self-defence courses organised by the police, an all women's theatre, various churches and a lot more. I also watched a flamenco show for a couple of minutes (gee, I whish I could move that gracefully), but didn't take the time to listen to any of the discussions organised by various fora. Too long-winded for my taste. After all, yesterday afternoon my main task was serving as a representative of our local group of the International Federation of University Women for two hours. Mind you, I'm just an ordinary member of the IFUW, but not part of the committee or anything. I just agreed on helping out when I was asked, since I had time anyway and was interested in the fair. All I had to do was informing those who were interested on what we do, giving them an idea of our monthly meetings that always host a speech (e.g. on education, health, gender research or politics) and handing out leaflets. The time passed quite quickly, I even met a couple of people I hadn't seen in a while.

When I returned home, I was rather tired but pleased. It had been an enjoyable afternoon, and now I have a small pile of folders and interesting stuff to leaf through.

So I'm an introverted, lonely, smart, sacastic, pessimistic brat who values her free time. Go figure, who would have guessed that. *smirks* I should probably make better use of my time than doing stupid memes nobody really needs.

09:12 pm - Bitter as a lemon
Found on [info]inglenook's lj.

What Flavour Are You? Mmm, I am Lemon Flavoured.Mmm, I am Lemon Flavoured.

I am bitter and twisted. Expect from me acerbic humour and sharp commentary. While I may seem nasty at first, I'm actually quite good company if I like you, so long as you don't mind a bit of cutting to the chase. What Flavour Are You?

So what?! I'm both a Slytherin and a Scorpio. Did you expect anything else? *smirks*

No seriously, I'm all for dry British humour, makes things spicy IMO. Besides, sharp sarcastic comments may be a sign of style and intelligence, while potty humour is usually nothing but blunt. I'll never hurt anybody's feelings, though, and you'll always notice that I'm just having fun, being ready to accept defeat myself. Moreover I do enjoy a good debate as long as everybody plays fairly, and while I may question your opinions, I'd never attack you personally.

I'm loyal to my true friends. I also usually hide my nastiness until you have proven time over time again that you deserve to get a taste of it. Takes a good while to get me started, I guess I'm rather patient. You may even drive me up the wall. But those who I have trusted and who have let me down will notice that I don't forget and forgive easily. You know, revenge is a dish that's best served cold.

Treat a lemon the right way and it will be sweet. Don't think so? Then try a piece of lemon cake. :D

And because I'm already talking about the sort of fun I like, I'll give you some examples behind the lj cuts. Can't deny the scientist in me. So if you don't like science jokes, please don't care to read on. :)

04:00 pm - English test
If you are interested in giving it a try, you can find it at The Commonly Confused Words Test. I think I saw it on [info]shagsthedustmop's LJ.

English Genius
You scored 100% Beginner, 93% Intermediate, 93% Advanced, and 83% Expert!
You did so extremely well, even I can't find a word to describe your excellence! You have the uncommon intelligence necessary to understand things that most people don't. You have an extensive vocabulary, and you're not afraid to use it properly! Way to go!

Not too bad for somebody who isn't a native speaker, huh? *smug grin* Besides, I even learned a new word (namely stationery). Didn't look it up while taking the test, though, but the alternative (i.e. stationary) just didn't make sense. Too bad that whoever created that test didn't give the correct answers. How are you supposed to learn if it isn't possible to find out which solution is correct?
